The selection process has started in January 2020, with a call of proposals. At the end of February 2020, 248 ideas have been received. The Cultural Heritage Monitoring Group, composed of local and international experts, created within the European Union Confidence Building Measures Programme (EU CBM), has selected 30 objectives. Each of them has been inspected by specialists for thorough documentation.

Later, 16 projects have been exposed to a public voting process that has ended on 3 August and has registered about 37,000 votes.

At the same time, members of the Cultural Heritage Monitoring Group have examined each project from the perspective of its cultural and historical importance, of its restoration urgency and confidence building principles.

The final decision of projects to be restored with the help of the European Union was taken considering both online voting constituted – 50%, and the decision of the Monitoring Group – 50%.

As the next step, the EU CBM team will sign Memorandums of Understanding with the institutions that take care of each objective.

Further, conservation/restauration designs will be developed, and actual conservation/restauration works, strictly in line with international and local cultural heritage regulations, will be conducted.

Each phase of the project will be announced, while companies which will conduct design and restauration works will be selected through public tenders, according to UNDP procurement procedures.
