The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Patricia Espinosa, expressed her gratitude to the Republic of Moldova for its leadership in developing and submitting the updated National Determined Contribution (NDC2) to the Paris Agreement, which aims to keep the increase of global average temperatures below 2°C by the end of XXI century.

“The effort made by the Republic of Moldova in preparing this important submission during these very difficult times for your country and for the whole world, is remarkable and highly appreciated. Raising your own ambition aspiration with the commitment to have greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 70 per cent below 1990 levels by 2030 is a valuable contribution to the global action against climate change. I also very much appreciate that the NDC2 of the Republic of Moldova includes a strong and forward-looking adaptation to climate change component,” has mentioned Patricia Espinosa in a letter addressed to the Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, Ion Perju, on 22 April 2020.

The Republic of Moldova is the fourth country in the world submitting to the UNFCCC Secretariat its updated Determined National Contribution (NDC2), after the Marshall Islands, Suriname and Norway. According to the document, Moldova has committed to unconditionally reduce by 2030 its greenhouse gas emissions by 70% below its reference year (1990) level. If the country will have access to low-cost technologies and financial resources, emissions reductions could increase by 2030 up to 88% below the 1990 year level.

The signatory parties of the Paris Agreement will present an updated NDC every 5 years between 2015 and 2030. Through updated NDCs, parties will increase their ambition to reduce GHG emissions in order to keep the global warming within 2°C increase by 2100. Achieving the reduction targets set up in NDC1 would not be enough and leading to global warming between 2.9 - 3.4° C by 2100, which would have serious consequences for all spheres of life on the planet.

The NDC2 of the Republic of Moldova was developed with the support of the EU4Climate Project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Program, being submitted to the UNFCCC Secretariat on March 4, 2020. The EU4Climate regional project provides assistance to Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries to update their NDCs, develop low-emission development strategies by 2050, strengthen their national systems for greenhouse gas emissions monitoring, reporting and verification, advanced aligning with the EU climate action acquis, integrate the climate dimension into the sectoral policy documents, raising awareness and developing sectoral guidelines for the implementation of the Paris Agreement, attracting investments in climate change and ensuring a better planning for climate change adaptation.
