“Grigore Vieru” park from Cahul municipality is renovated with European Union’s support

The central park from Cahul city is renovated with the assistance provided by the European Union. The reconstruction works of the “Grigore Vieru” park, with a total area of six hectares, started in August this year and are due to be completed by the summer of 2021. The activity is conducted by the EU4Moldova: Focal Regions Programme, financed and strategically guided by the EU, and implemented by UNDP and UNICEF. Cahul Mayoralty co-finances the renovation works of the central park.

The investment of €372,525 is provided from the EU4Moldova: Focal regions Programme funds, the municipality contributing with an additional amount of €105,455. To date, a considerable part of the works has been carried out, such as the paving of 10,000 m2 of alleys, extension of the lighting system, foundation preparation for the installation of lanterns and recreation benches, start of the construction of the pedestrian light and music fountain. The revitalization works are ongoing: the irrigation system for the maintenance of green areas to be installed, the new trash bins, lanterns with decorative LED lighting, new benches will be mounted, the old ones being renovated. The park will become greener with over 350 trees and shrubs and 1,200 flowers and 40,000 m2 of lawn to be planted. The pedestrian musical fountain with multicolored water jets lighting will be finalized next year.

We extend our gratitude to European Union for the provided financial assistance,” mentions Nicolae Dandiş, mayor of Cahul municipality.

The renovation of “Grigore Vieru” park is one of the activities to modernize the city center of Cahul within the EU4Moldova: Focal Regions Programme. The modernization is a participatory and engaging process, with people coming up with ideas for the city center transformation.

“The reconstruction of the central park was in the top three most voted ideas within the contest ‘EU for Cahul. Your Idea for a European Municipality’, conducted in several stages during January – June 2020, and reaching thousands of participants, citizens, and city fans. We come up with investments that meet people's needs and expectations,” stated Alexandru Pelivan, the manager of the „EU4Moldova: Focal regions” Programme.

The renovation of the central park is the first infrastructure project launched in Cahul city with the financial assistance of EU4Moldova: Focal Regions Programme. Other modernization works will be launched over the next years.

“EU4Moldova: Focal Regions” Programme (2019-2024) supports smart, inclusive and sustainable social-economic development in Cahul and Ungheni regions to ensure better standards of living for citizens. The Programme has a total budget of €23 million, is financed by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
