Turkish historians search Istanbul archives for information about Bender Fortress, that could help for its renovation

December 16, 2019

Turkish experts have found so far almost 1700 documents that refer to the Citadel, but they have to determine how relevant are they for the conservation project. There are also many old pictures among those documents.

Research has started within the Fortress’ renovation project, initiated by European Union and realized in the framework of the EU Confidence Building Measures Programme, implemented by UNDP.

The Programme has commissioned a technical expertise of the construction, that identified the most stringent problems. Based on it, a technical project to indicate the most urgent necessary works will be produced.

The European Union has allocated 2 million Euros until 2021 for renovation of Bender Fortress, according to international standards. The construction, built in XV century, is considered an important historic objective with significant touristic perspectives.

The EU Confidence Building Measures Programme, implemented by UNDP, contributes to building confidence among the inhabitants from both banks of the Nistru River by involving them in joint projects.
