    World Business and Development Awards announce winners at Rio+20: Fighting poverty can benefit businesses

    Eleven companies received today the 2012 World Business and Development Awards (WBDA) for their efforts to improve living standards in some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities. Winners were recognized at a ceremony concluding the Business Action for Sustainable Development Business Day taking place during the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), where world leaders along with thousands of participants from governments, the private sector, NGOs and other groups, have convened.

    New statistical publication reveals territorial aspects of equal chances and opportunities for women and men in Moldova

    “The biggest number of women per thousand men live in Balti municipality. The greatest number of elderly people live in the northern rayons. In 21 rayons of the country the rate of fertility is below the critical level. The highest birth rate was registered in Gagauzia ATU, while the lowest - in Chisinau municipality. Women are mainly employed in the service sector, while men are engaged in agricultural activities. The most of unemployed-women have higher level of education, among unemployed-men the ones with secondary vocational education prevail. Only in Nisporeni rayon the women’s monthly average wage exceeded men’s average wage. Men have 18% higher pension compared to women, and in Chisinau the average pension is 30% higher than in the rest of the country. In all municipalities of the country the mayors’ position are held by men, and only 3 women were elected as presidents of rayons. Women in positions of vice president of rayons amount 10% and over 37.5 percent of municipal and local council members.” These and other gender sensitive statistical data are presented in the publication “Women and Men in the Republic of Moldova. Analysis from a territorial perspective”, developed by National Bureau of Statistics, with UN Agencies support – UNDP, UN Women and the financial assistance of the Swedish Government.

    80 teenagers learn how to produce energy from renewable sources and to use it in a thrifty manner

    Summer Camp ENERGEL will host eighty 7-th and 8-th-grade school students from Stefan Voda, Leova, Falesti, Cantemir, Sangerei, Hincesti and Telenesti Districts, and from ATU Gagauz Yeri for ten days where they will learn how to produce energy from natural sources and use it efficiently.

    Inter-Municipal Cooperation is important for local authorities efficiency and public service quality

    Over 130 representatives of local and central authorities, civil society and development partners met at the First National Conference on Inter-Municipal Cooperation, held on June 5-6 in Costesti, Ialoveni, with UN Agencies – UNDP and Un Women support. The event aimed to expand cooperation between central and local public administration with the representative associations and all those interested in local and regional development, and to develop cooperation initiatives between local communities. The Inter-Municipal Cooperation is an efficient tool to increase the potential of local authorities and to improve the quality of public services delivered to citizens.

    On the European Parks Day, the first ecotourism route was officially opened in the future National Park Orhei

    The first ecotourism route, which connects two cultural-historical values: the House-Museum "Alexandru Donici" and Curchi Monastery, was inaugurated in the future territory of National Park Orhei. Previously, this route was known only from locals' sayings. With UNDP support, the route was marked with information boards, describing the cultural and historical values and the map of this route, as well as the natural heritage of the first National Park. Also, the locals and tourists will benefit of appropriate leisure places, where they can admire nature in this area.

    Forensic documentation of torture, an important procedure in combating the torture phenomena

    Independent national and international experts, lawyers, representatives of state institutions working in prevention and combating torture and forensic experts from both banks of Nistru River discussed during a national conference the situation of efficient forensic documentation of torture and other ill-treatment cases. The event was organised in the framework of “Strengthening the forensic examination of torture and other forms of ill-treatment in Moldova” project, financed by the European Union and implemented by UNDP, in partnership with the OSCE Mission to Moldova and the Rehabilitation Centre of Torture Victims "Memoria".

    The smallest village from ATU Gagauz Yeri will be prepared for winter. The public institutions from Carbalia will be heated during the next winter with briquettes , modern biomass-based fuel. The launch of the heating systems in the community center and the kindergarten from Carbalia was organized on Saturday, May 19, during the Europe Day in ATU Gagauz Yeri.

    Message by UNDP Administrator, Helen Clark on the international day against homophobia and transphobia

    Today is the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO). It commemorates the World Health Organisation’s decision in 1990 to remove homosexuality from the list of mental disorders. That was indeed a milestone, and since then there has been much progress. Last year, the Human Rights Council passed their first resolution ever on “Human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity”. An historic study documenting discriminatory laws and practices and acts of violence against individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity was produced by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and debated by the Council.

    Parliament adopted the National Decentralization Strategy

    After nearly two years of debates and public consultations, the National Decentralization Strategy was adopted by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and will enter into force upon its publication in the Official Monitor. The draft Strategy was developed and initially approved by the Government.
