On the first day of spring, more than 120 people visited the United Nations House in Moldova

March 1, 2018

The United Nations House in Moldova opened its doors to visitors on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the Republic of Moldova's accession to the UN. More than 120 people, in the vast majority school and university students, visited for the first time the organization and learned first-hand about the work of the United Nations agencies and projects in Moldova.

Gheorghe Graur, 24, an assistant lecturer at the Police Academy, says that this visit is a soulful one for him. "I have confidence in international organizations, because at the center of their work are the people and their rights. For me, the UN is the greatest promoter and defender of human rights. I wanted to see the people working there, what are the UN visions and projects and I was pleasantly surprised. I expected it to be a closed system, but in fact people are open here."

Participants took the tour of the UN house, which hosts resident agencies since 1994. Since 2014, the ground floor of the UN building is fully accessible to people with disabilities. On 1 March 2017, an elevator was launched, which makes UN house accessible for all visitors.

More than 120 people visited the UN House, visitors were divided in four groups, each group depending on the areas of interest that they chose:

  1. Governance, human rights and gender equality
  2. Sustainable, inclusive and equitable economic growth
  3. Environmental sustainability and resilience
  4. Inclusive and equitable social development

These four areas are contained in the new cooperation program "Republic of Moldova - UN Support Framework for Sustainable Development 2018-2022", which is guided by the national development priorities, the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Visitors met with representatives of several UN agencies and received answers to their questions.

Mihaela Furculita, 17, student at “Spiru Haret” Lyceum, said that "today was a very productive day for me. I really like to visit the UN House, because as a student I want to gather as much experience and information as possible. That's why it's important for young people to have this opportunity. I enjoyed very much the interactive discussions and I learned useful information about UN agencies and their mission."

UN in Moldova organized an open house event for the first time on 20 October 2015, on the occasion of its 70th anniversary.

The United Nations has established its presence in the Republic of Moldova through its specialized programs and agencies, immediately after its accession to the United Nations in 1992.

On 24 October 1945, after the end of the World War II, the United Nations were founded to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations and promote social progress, better living standards and human rights.
