Musicians build cultural bridges over the Nistru River
Young musicians from both sides of the Nistru River held together a classical music concert on November 8, at the “Serghei Lunchevici” National Philharmonic in Chisinau. These laureates of international contests, accompanied by the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, delighted the audience with new interpretations of Tchaikovsky’s most adored creations.
“The Great Tchaikovsky's charming music” concert (Farmecul muzicii marelui Ceaikovski) is part of a series of 10 musical performances organized during one year on both banks of the Nistru River by the Chisinau Collaboration and Partnership Center and the Republican Palace of Tiraspol, with the assistance of the EU-UNDP Support to Confidence Building Measures Programme (SCBM). Three other joint concerts have been organized so far in Rybnitsa, Chisinau and Tiraspol.
“There is no better way to bring the people on both sides of the river closer together than through music. Music is without limits and boundaries. For this reason, the European Union supports this joint cultural project aimed at restoring the relations between artists and musicians from both banks of the Nistru River. Through joint concerts being held in Chisinau, Tiraspol, Rybnitsa and other towns, we contribute to the confidence building between people living on both banks of Nistru river and offer them the possibility to enjoy the classical music and admire the talented musicians Moldova has”, Wicher Slagter, Head of Political and Economic Section, Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova.
During the next six months, 6 other cultural performances will be held in Chisinau, Ribnita, Tiraspol and Bender, joining over 100 talented children and young people, as well as 400 teachers and professional musicians from both banks of Nistru River. By funding these cultural initiatives, the EU-UNDP Support to Confidence Building Measures Programme aims at developing a sustainable partnership between cultural institutions from both banks of the Nistru River and helping young people to share experience and develop their artistic skills together.
The EU-UNDP Programme aims to increase the level of confidence between people on both banks of the Nistru River, helping them cooperate and improve the quality of their lives. In this regard, the European Union and the UNDP provide financial and technical support to their joint activities in five key areas: business development, civil society development, social infrastructure, healthcare and environmental protection.
The Support to Confidence Building Measures Programme is implemented by UNDP Moldova during 2012-2015, with a total budget of 10,600,000 Euro, granted by the EU (9,500,000 Euro) and UNDP (1,100,000 Euro).
