The UNDP-EU “Support to Confidence Building Measures” Programme celebrated on Sunday, May 26, Europe  Day in Tiraspol, together with the people from the left side of the Nistru River, representatives of the UN Agencies, and diplomatic corps.

The tent of the “Support to Confidence Building Measures” Programme in the European Town, located just for one day in the Victory Park from Tiraspol, was visited by hundreds of people willing to learn more about the activities supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Union (EU) to promote confidence building between people on the both sides of the Nistru River. Thus, they found out about the results achieved through common efforts in 5 key areas: business development, civil society, social infrastructure renovation, health, and environment.

Present at the event, Nicola Harrington-Buhay, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Moldova, mentioned in her interviews to media that thanks to the Programme and in collaboration with other UN organizations and agencies, a number of projects were implemented, having a direct impact on the life quality of people from the Transnistrian region. Results mentioned by the UN Resident Coordinator include the improvement of the perinatal system, water quality, and social infrastructure in the region. According to Ms. Harrington-Buhay, all these results would not have been possible without the close collaboration with the local authorities, civil society, business community, and other stakeholders interested in the social and economic development of local communities.

Participants attending the event dedicated to Europe Day in Tiraspol got actively involved in the activities organized by the UNDP-EU Programme on Sunday: unique handicrafts exhibitions, sport competitions, and social theatre performance. Visitors also took part in an express testing of their entrepreneurial skills and found out about the business development activities supported by the UNDP-EU Programme. They also participated in activities promoting road safety, dancing and singing together with the beneficiaries of the UNDP-EU Programme. Children of all ages have participated in a drawing contest, expressing in an artistic manner their opinion about how people’s life can be improved on both sides of the Nistru River. The contest participants were awarded with balloons, T-shirts, caps, and reflectors.
