Ecaterina Herta from Moldova wins the special nomination “Climate change in my eyes” at the first International Photo Contest dedicated to the Ozone Layer Protection and Climate Change, organized by UNDP in Uzbekistan.
Ecaterina is 18 old and studies at “Aurel David” high school from Bardar village. She is passionate about photography: "I learned about the photo contest from a local news website and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, I do not have a professional camera and I took the picture with my modest phone. I was very surprised and happy to find about the nomination because at the contest were received in total 285 pictures". Ecaterina received a diploma and a prize, a smart phone.
"We hope that Ecaterina’s success will inspire other young people as well to participate in similar competitions and to be aware that the ozone layer is getting influenced by human action", noted Inga Podoroghin, Program Specialist, Environment, Climate Change and Energy, UNDP Moldova.
The International Photo Contest was held to raise awareness of the world community on the ozone layer and climate change issues, and to promote careful attitude towards the environment.
The Contest was open to professional and amateur photographers from around the world and was held in the following categories: "Ozone layer and I", "Climate change in my eyes". Additionally, there was a special nomination “Women and Ozone Layer”, which was introduced by UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub.
The selection process of photos was carried out in 3 stages. These are: preliminary selection of 100 photos (by 50 in each category) by the International Jury, online voting on www.envcontest.uz and final selection of the 6 main winners (by 3 in each category).
During the application period (from 10 July to 15 August 2017) 285 photos were received from 56 countries. 104 of them were submitted in the category of "Ozone layer and I" and 181 - in the category of "Climate change in my eyes". More than 50% of the photos were sent by women and youth.
