GOPAC Moldova’s statement against corruption backed by half of Moldovan parliamentarians

Oct 12, 2017

Over half of Moldovan parliamentarians joined an anti-corruption appeal made by GOPAC Moldova in today’s plenary session of Parliament.

The Moldovan National Bureau of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC Moldova) read a statement committing to sustained efforts to curb corruption in the Moldovan public sector and urging all MPs to observe the principles of parliamentary integrity and ethics. The statement was signed by 53 members of Parliament.

Roman Botan, co-chair of GOPAC Moldova, chairman of the Standing Committee on National Security, Defense and Public Order, said: “We are convinced that the Moldovan public sector and the political class must be guided by integrity and professionalism.”

The statement provides for strengthening efforts to implement GRECO recommendations for fighting corruption in Moldova, approving the Rules of ethics and parliamentary integrity and working closely with civil society to promote good anti-corruption practices.

Similarly, GOPAC Moldova will initiate a series of public consultations with citizens and civil society from several regions of the country to get a better understanding of how corruption affects people in the regions. In July, GOPAC members discussed with citizens and the local government officials in Edinet. The next round of discussions would take place in Cahul on 23 October.

The GOPAC Moldova National Bureau was established on July 12, 2016, with the support of UNDP, within the project “Strengthening Parliamentary Governance in Moldova”, funded by the Government of Sweden. Moldova joins a network of over 60 GOPAC national offices all over the world.

GOPAC Moldova has 9 members, current and former members in Parliament, representatives of all political groups. The members of the group aim to promote a culture of zero tolerance of corruption and to organize public discussions, provide expertise and analysis, and take public stands to eliminate the scourge from the public sector and from society as a whole.
