    Moldova's Central Electoral Commission explores way of integrating gender into their work

    Moldova’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) and Romania’s Permanent Electoral Authority as well as civil society representatives from both countries participated in an international workshop entitled “Gender and Elections”. Supported by UNDP’s Democracy Programme/Elections, the workshop aimed at raising awareness of electoral staff on key gender aspects in elections.

    One million Euro are provided by the European Union for the purchase of biomass fuel production equipment through the leasing mechanism

    Today, Deputy Prime Minister Valeriu Lazar, Minister of Economy, jointly with the Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Moldova, Narine Sahakyan, have signed the document aimed at launching a new Programme, totalling EUR1 million, provided for lease purchase, by instalment, of biomass fuel production equipment. The money is provided by the European Union, through the Energy and Biomass Project, financed by the EU and co-financed and implemented by UNDP Moldova.

    Blogging as a tool to promote confidence building between both banks of the Nistru River

    More than 60 pupils and teachers from 10 schools from the Transnistrian region will attend a series of training programs where they will learn how to create a blog where their school activity will be posted. These trainings are being realized by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) with the assistance of the “Support to Confidence Building Measures” Program (SCBM). The first two teams of pupils and teachers from the Transnistrian region have already attended the training in blogging and have created two blogs for their schools.

    School students from nine districts will learn about renewables and energy efficiency

    The Educational Initiative aimed at promoting renewables and energy efficiency has been launched in nine new Districts. More than 2,000 of 7th and 8th-grade school students from Glodeni, Donduseni, Soroca, Rascani, Soldanesti, Rezina, Orhei, Ungheni and Anenii Noi Districts will learn during this school year that energy is embedded in everything surrounding us, i.e. the Sun, wind, plants, water, and they will be taught the secret of efficient energy consumption. The Educational Initiative will cover the communities envisaged to connect their public institutions to biomass-fuelled heating systems within Moldova Energy and Biomass Project.

    The forensic medical personnel from the Republic of Moldova trained in implementation of Istanbul protocol standards

    In the period September-October 2012, about 70 forensic doctors, medical personnel from the detention places and penitentiary institutions and from emergency hospitals are trained for the first time in forensic examination and documentation of torture and other ill-treatment cases in accordance with the provisions of Instanbul Protocol. The trainings are organized in the framework of the project "Strengthening the forensic examination of torture and other forms of ill-treatment in Moldova", financed by the European Union and co-financed and implemented by United Nations Development Programme in Moldova.

    Big Plans for Biomass

    The kindergarten in the village of Ermoclia has declared its independence. Energy independence, that is. Instead of struggling to keep students warm with expensive imported gas, the kindergarten now heats up with locally produced biomass fuels made from readily available agricultural wastes such as straw, corn stalks and sawdust.

    Community transport service was launched in Ciuciuleni village, Hincesti district

    For the first time today, the children from Ciuciuleni village, Hincesti district, did not have to walk more than 5 km to get to the school. The primary school children were driven to school by a community minibus purchased at the community’s innititative, by the local public authorities, with the support of the Joint Integrated Local Development Programme (JILDP). A similar situation was in other four communities of the republic that were also assisted by the Program in purchasing community transport and in ensuring population’s access to better education and health care services.

    The forensic experts trained for the first time in examination and documentation of torture cases

    About 70 forensic experts from the Republic of Moldova were trained in examination and documentation of torture and other ill-treatment cases during June-August. The activities were planned and structured on the basis of the training needs assessment performed previously by a group of national experts in torture prevention and combating.

    Torture doesn't leave only physical trauma

    While leaving the doctor's office I met a man, a victim of torture. He stopped to change a few words with Ludmila Popovici, director of the Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victims “Memoria”. “The Center is providing mainly consultancy and advisory services. We have a contract with the Clinic no. 1 of Chisinau, where our beneficiaries can make diagnostic investigations or receive doctors’ consultations. In addition, we provide necessary medical treatment. The torture affects the victim in a multilateral way, not only physically, as some believe. That’s why the person should receive complex assistance”, says Ludmila Popovici.

    After four months of monitoring visits conducted by Comrat Legal Clinic to the temporary detention isolators of ATU Gagauzia, internal investigations were initiated against three policemen of Comrat Police Station of torture allegations and other five complains are examined by Prosecutor Office of Comrat Municipality.
