    The forensic medical personnel from the Republic of Moldova trained in implementation of Istanbul protocol standards

    In the period September-October 2012, about 70 forensic doctors, medical personnel from the detention places and penitentiary institutions and from emergency hospitals are trained for the first time in forensic examination and documentation of torture and other ill-treatment cases in accordance with the provisions of Instanbul Protocol. The trainings are organized in the framework of the project "Strengthening the forensic examination of torture and other forms of ill-treatment in Moldova", financed by the European Union and co-financed and implemented by United Nations Development Programme in Moldova.

    Children of Cioresti and Hincăuţi villages have kindergartens and their mothers - jobs

    Thirty three girls and boys from vulnerable families of Cioresti village, Nisporeni district have now access to pre-school education and other 64 children of Hincauti village, Edinet district enjoy better conditions in their kindergarten thanks to the community initiatives supported by Joint Integrated Local Development Programme (JILDP).

    Big Plans for Biomass

    The kindergarten in the village of Ermoclia has declared its independence. Energy independence, that is. Instead of struggling to keep students warm with expensive imported gas, the kindergarten now heats up with locally produced biomass fuels made from readily available agricultural wastes such as straw, corn stalks and sawdust.

    UNDP Launches Collection of Innovative Development Stories in Europe and Central Asia

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched today a new publication at its Executive Board meeting showcasing transformative development achievements in Eastern European and Central Asian countries. Much of these successes are based on innovative new social policies addressing the needs of that region’s chronically poor and marginalized, including the Roma, youth, the long-term unemployed and people with disabilities.

    Community transport service was launched in Ciuciuleni village, Hincesti district

    For the first time today, the children from Ciuciuleni village, Hincesti district, did not have to walk more than 5 km to get to the school. The primary school children were driven to school by a community minibus purchased at the community’s innititative, by the local public authorities, with the support of the Joint Integrated Local Development Programme (JILDP). A similar situation was in other four communities of the republic that were also assisted by the Program in purchasing community transport and in ensuring population’s access to better education and health care services.

    The forensic experts trained for the first time in examination and documentation of torture cases

    About 70 forensic experts from the Republic of Moldova were trained in examination and documentation of torture and other ill-treatment cases during June-August. The activities were planned and structured on the basis of the training needs assessment performed previously by a group of national experts in torture prevention and combating.

    Torture doesn't leave only physical trauma

    While leaving the doctor's office I met a man, a victim of torture. He stopped to change a few words with Ludmila Popovici, director of the Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victims “Memoria”. “The Center is providing mainly consultancy and advisory services. We have a contract with the Clinic no. 1 of Chisinau, where our beneficiaries can make diagnostic investigations or receive doctors’ consultations. In addition, we provide necessary medical treatment. The torture affects the victim in a multilateral way, not only physically, as some believe. That’s why the person should receive complex assistance”, says Ludmila Popovici.

    After four months of monitoring visits conducted by Comrat Legal Clinic to the temporary detention isolators of ATU Gagauzia, internal investigations were initiated against three policemen of Comrat Police Station of torture allegations and other five complains are examined by Prosecutor Office of Comrat Municipality.

    New statistical publication reveals territorial aspects of equal chances and opportunities for women and men in Moldova

    “The biggest number of women per thousand men live in Balti municipality. The greatest number of elderly people live in the northern rayons. In 21 rayons of the country the rate of fertility is below the critical level. The highest birth rate was registered in Gagauzia ATU, while the lowest - in Chisinau municipality. Women are mainly employed in the service sector, while men are engaged in agricultural activities. The most of unemployed-women have higher level of education, among unemployed-men the ones with secondary vocational education prevail. Only in Nisporeni rayon the women’s monthly average wage exceeded men’s average wage. Men have 18% higher pension compared to women, and in Chisinau the average pension is 30% higher than in the rest of the country. In all municipalities of the country the mayors’ position are held by men, and only 3 women were elected as presidents of rayons. Women in positions of vice president of rayons amount 10% and over 37.5 percent of municipal and local council members.” These and other gender sensitive statistical data are presented in the publication “Women and Men in the Republic of Moldova. Analysis from a territorial perspective”, developed by National Bureau of Statistics, with UN Agencies support – UNDP, UN Women and the financial assistance of the Swedish Government.

    80 teenagers learn how to produce energy from renewable sources and to use it in a thrifty manner

    Summer Camp ENERGEL will host eighty 7-th and 8-th-grade school students from Stefan Voda, Leova, Falesti, Cantemir, Sangerei, Hincesti and Telenesti Districts, and from ATU Gagauz Yeri for ten days where they will learn how to produce energy from natural sources and use it efficiently.
